Mr. Hawke is one of the Radio Free Ukraine “Jedburgh Mentors” for our Cadet2Cadet and Warrior2Warrior Program & Battle of Hostomel Airport Case Study. The program includes stakeholders from Ukraine and USA who require military professional development opportunities to better face the challenges they will face in combat in Ukraine, or elsewhere in their defense of global security in Ukraine and beyond. Hawke is among the most experienced and capable subject matter experts in the world, with a common goal of helping Ukraine win the war and hold Russia accountable for war crimes. Case study Jedburgh Mentor experts include Ukrainian Infantry and military academy graduates, Army Special Forces and Ranger Regiment, Infantry, Field Artillery, Aviation, and Information Operations, and special mission units (SMU) as well as defense and civilian industries. The project manager is Army Special Forces veteran Mike Robinson, who served as a Field Artillery and Special Forces officer who served in the Army from the 1970s, 80s, and 1990s, and into this century as a US national defense consultant for both US Central Command during the Gulf War, and as the national program manager for bioterrorism surveillance after 9/11. Both Hawke and Robinson are part of the Special Forces Brotherhood and have know each other long before this war.
Mr. Hawke is supporting the Ukrainian war exhibition, as well as the series of virtual professional development exchanges between Ukrainians and Americans, with mentorship from professional subject matter expert volunteers with applicable military experience and credentials. The focus is on a case study of the Battle of Hostomel Airport aka the Battle of Antonov Airport, between invading Russian Special Forces and Ukrainian defenders. The battle took place on 24-25 February 2022.
The initial Russian operation aimed at securing early access for the invasion forces into Kyiv to end the entire war within a day or two. Instead, Russian intelligence had failed to assess the actual concentration of Ukrainian defenders around the airport and assumed only token defenses. As the initial landing force was too small to hold the locality, while the Russian military was unable to secure air transport for reinforcements as well as prevent Ukrainian counterattacks, this led to the destruction of the first landing force. The failure of Russian forces to take Hostomel and another airport at Vasylkiv at the invasion’s start, ended Russia’s chance to bring the conflict to swift conclusion.
